Determining the Required Door Panel Size for Traditional Sliding Doors The door panel needs to be slightly wider than the door opening. The door is mounted about 1/2" to 1" above floor level, so the door panel can be the same height as the door height opening. Here are some guidelines on measuring.
Determine the minimum door width: To determine the minimum door width, measure the distance between the inside frame opening and add 2” to each side (A + 2” + 2” = minimum door width ). This will allow the door to cover the frame opening when the door is fully closed. Determine the minimum door height: To determine the minimum door height, measure between the finished floor and the frame, then subtract ½” for floor clearance from the bottom of the door (B - 1/2” = minimum door height ). Door may cover the top trim if desired. Check for minimum door clearance: A minimum clearance of 6½” (C) is required from the top of the door to the ceiling, to accommodate the track and the sliding hardware. The top of the door should be level or above the frame opening. A minimum clearance of available wall space equal to the actual door width is required (D) for the door to completely roll free of the door opening.

Determining the Required Sliding Door Panel Size with Houdini Hardware TM Choosing the correct door size depends upon if your wall opening is surrounded by decorative casing or molding. (Casing cannot be more than 5/8” deep). The Direction of opening may be Left to Right, or Right to Left, and the Range of Opening may be Partially Open (allowing a grip on the door from either side), or Fully Open. Wall space clearance must be available to accomodate the door. FRONT
Determine the minimum door width: For a Fully Open installation, it is recommended that the width of the door is at least 8” greater than the width of the wall opening. This type of installation does not block any of the wall opening; the edge of the door is flush with the edge of the wall opening (if the wall is level).
Example: If the wall opening is 30”, then a minimum door size of at least 38” will allow 4 inches on each side of the door.

For a Partially Open installation, it is recommended that the width of the door is at least 8” greater than the width of the opening as well. However, this type of installation does block some of the wall opening; the edge of the door sticking out, not flush with the edge of the wall opening. Determine the minimum door height: If the Bottom Track is to be attached directly to the bottom of the door (Standard Installation) , measure from the Top Track (installed on the backside of the door) down to the floor and add 1 inch to the height. If casing (wood trim) is present, measure from the top of the casing to the bottom of the finished floor and add 1 inch to the height. If the Bottom Track is to be installed and recessed inside the door , measure from the Top Track (installed on the backside of the door) down to the floor and add 2-1/2” to the height. If casing (wood trim) is present, measure from the top of the casing to the bottom of the finished floor and add 2-1/2”.
